Growing up as a San Mateo native has allowed me the privilege of exploring all the parks the city has to offer. My grandparents took my sister and I to Central Park weekly, and in turn, I took my young daughter there as a mom. There was nothing better than watching a young child gaze into the koi pond at the Japanese Tea Garden. Beyond Central Park, there are so many cool options for families with children ranging in all ages. My advice- check them all out, even if that means a drive to another side of the city.
San Mateo is a vibrant city with plenty to offer for families, especially when it comes to outdoor activities. From scenic landscapes to playgrounds and picnic areas, the parks in San Mateo provide the perfect backdrop for family fun. Here are some of the best parks for families to explore and enjoy in this beautiful city.
Central Park is the heart of San Mateo and a favorite destination for families. Spanning 16 acres, this park features:
Japanese Tea Garden: A serene space with koi ponds, a pagoda, and seasonal cherry blossoms.
Playground: Perfect for kids of all ages, with modern equipment and plenty of shade.
Mini Train Rides: A seasonal attraction that younger children will adore.
Picnic Areas: Ideal for family gatherings and birthday celebrations. Central Park also hosts community events throughout the year, making it a lively spot for everyone.
For families who love nature and adventure, Coyote Point Recreation Area is a must-visit. Highlights include:
Magic Mountain Playground: A massive, castle-themed playground with slides, climbing structures, and swings.
Beach Access: A small beach area perfect for wading and watching the waves.
CuriOdyssey: An interactive science museum with animal exhibits and hands-on activities for kids.
Trails and Picnic Areas: Enjoy scenic walks or bike rides along the Bay Trail and have a picnic with breathtaking views. This park combines outdoor fun with educational opportunities, making it a hit with families.
Nestled at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain, Laurelwood Park is a tranquil escape with something for everyone:
Playground: A smaller but well-equipped play area for kids.
Trails: Hiking trails that lead to stunning panoramic views of the Peninsula.
Open Spaces: Large grassy areas perfect for kite flying, frisbee, or a casual game of soccer.
Picnic Areas: Shaded spots for relaxing family meals. Laurelwood Park’s peaceful setting makes it a great spot for families looking to unwind.
Ryder Park is a hidden gem for families seeking a mix of recreation and relaxation:
Interactive Water Feature: A splash pad where kids can cool off on warm days.
Playground: A modern play structure with slides, climbing walls, and swings.
Picnic Areas: Tables and grills for barbecues and family lunches.
Bay Trail Access: Take a family bike ride or stroll along the trail with views of the Bay. This park offers a little bit of everything, making it a versatile choice for families.
Beresford Park is a popular choice for its variety of amenities:
Playground: A large play area with options for toddlers and older kids.
Skate Park: A favorite for adventurous older kids and teens.
Sports Facilities: Tennis courts, basketball courts, and a baseball field for active families.
Community Garden: A unique feature where families can explore gardening together. With its lively atmosphere, Beresford Park is perfect for families who love staying active.
San Mateo’s parks offer endless opportunities for families to connect, play, and create lasting memories. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat, an educational outing, or a place for the kids to burn off energy, you’ll find the perfect spot in this city.
