What’s It Like Living In San Mateo Village

What’s It Like Living In San Mateo Village

A convenient location is just one of the major draws when it comes to living in the quaint neighborhood of San Mateo Village. Often shortened to just “The Village” by locals, the neighborhood has evolved from a place of mostly starter homes to a place coveted for its location and its close proximity to things people need and want in the Mid-Peninsula.

This San Mateo neighborhood has the advantage of bordering 101 Freeway to the east, plus the Caltrain tracks, El Camino Real, and Old County Road to the west. The Hillsdale neighborhood sits just to the north of The Village, while the Laurie Meadows neighborhood sits to its south.

While many used to view The Village as a place to buy their first home, some are now discovering the true value of living in such a convenient location. Not only is it easy to get on the 101 living in The Village, but some homes in this neighborhood are also within walking distance of nearby shopping, restaurants, and the Caltrain, too. While homes in The Village have traditionally brought in prices below the median of San Mateo County, the desirability of the neighborhood is beginning to now show up in home prices.

Most of them tend to be single-family homes, built up around the 1940s and 1950s. Ranch-style homes are prevalent, but some homeowners have added a second story over the years. Traditionally the homes sit on 5,000-square-foot lots. This is the kind of place where neighbors seem to know neighbors, and it’s common to find kids and families out enjoying a bike ride or a walk along some of the flat neighborhood streets. While most residences are single-family homes in The Village, you may find some condos and apartments a little closer to Old County Road.

For added convenience, many homes sit within walking distance of George Hall Elementary, which happens to sit right in the neighborhood. Other neighborhood options include Casanova Park. While small in size, it does offer a play structure and green space for those of all ages, plus it connects up with the larger Laurie Meadows Park nearby.

While the neighborhood of San Mateo Village is almost entirely residential itself, it does have the advantage of sitting right next to several restaurants, a Whole Foods Market, and other conveniences. Hillsdale Shopping Center is one of San Mateo County’s largest malls, with a movie theater, Pinstripes bowling and bocce, a Nordstrom, and more. The 101 is right by the neighborhood, but it’s simply a short drive, too, to hop on I-280, Highway 92, or even walk to the Hillsdale Caltrain station. When it comes to convenience and a great location, you simply cannot beat the many advantages of living in San Mateo Village.
